I can still recall when the Facebook based photo blog ‘Humans of New York (HONY)’ go viral around the world right after the book published under the same name by founder of the blog Brandon Stanton in 2013 October. New York Street photographer and blogger Brandon Stanton was keen to take portraits of people on streets of world’s most popular city of New York, his aim was to share the stories of people living in this business city with the people across the world.

His passion and determination later took him to visit several other countries around the world including my very own homeland Pakistan back in August 2015. From Pakistan he shared heart touching stories of people of Pakistan. And, by placing the developing South Asian nation into the global frame of positivity, during his trip his photos helped raise more than $2.3 million to free bonded brick workers.

In just few days of posting picture of Bonded Labor Liberation Front group’s founder Syeda Ghulam Fatima, tens of thousands of people have donated money to the Bonded Labor Liberation Front, a small organization in Lahore that works to end bonded labor in Pakistan.

Today I’ve also decided to start another photo and video blog “Humans of Indo-Pak”, inspired by the ‘Humans of New York (HONY)’. During these tense times of unrest between world’s two nuclear powers India and Pakistan, after ‘Uri Attack’ in which several Indian soldiers including four terrorists killed. Historic rivalry between India and Pakistan is just sparked one more time after this terrorist attack.

Beside that I’ve also researched a bit today for my blog readers and sharing a list of 25 must Like and Follow Facebook “Humans of ” Pages’ on the same pattern of HONY. Most of these pages have already fan following in thousands and all of these pages are sharing some great and amazing stories of real people from every corner of this planet world.

Do teenage or adults have more efficient brains when it comes to technology?

When it comes to technology, adults won’t be able to keep up with their children. It took the radio 38 years to reach 50 million people, but it took 20 for the phone and 13 for the television. In contrast, it took Facebook 3.6 years and Twitter didn’t even need that much time — in fact, it took Google Plus 88 days.

Over the last 15 years, digital communication has ushered in more changes than the printing press did in 1570. And the standout early adopters in this world are teenagers, whose brains appear to have an extraordinary capacity to adapt to the world around them, according to Dr Jay Giedd, an adolescent brain expert.

We are now discovering that, as a species, our brains during the teenage years are still flexible and capable of adapting. Having a more flexible brain means that certain parts of it, such as impulse control and the ability to make long-term decisions haven’t developed yet — which may also explain why, unlike some of our ancestors, we spend an extended period living under the protection of our parents rather than leaving home at the age of 12 or 13. This also means that the adolescent brain can adapt to new technology, allowing teenagers to keep up with the accelerating pace of digital technology and giving them a multitasking advantage.

In the US, teenagers are spending 8.5 hours using computers, mobiles and other devices to learn, interact and play. This jumps to 11.5 if you take into account all of the multi-tasking that goes on, such as talking on the phone while you’re watching TV. Australian teenagers were found to be spending an average of 7 hours, 38 minutes using these devices in 2009.

As they stare at these screens, they’re taking in and sifting through an incredible amount of information; in the past, they would have been working out how to do math’s or thinking about English literature. “The skills that the brain needs to be good at are shifting,” says Geidd. “The skill has become how to deal with large amounts of information. Socializing in a digital world

There are concerns as to how social media is affecting the way in which the brain learns to socialize, as one of the most important skills that we learn as children is how to make friends and interact with people around you. Geidd says that from a biology standpoint, a lot of what goes on inside our brains is social. “A lot of the brain changes are sort of set up to develop these social skills.”

These interactions are now being changed by technology — you could have hundreds of friends, all of whom are real people that you interact with — and scientists aren’t sure whether we’ll be able to develop the same skills using Facebook.

Another concern comes from the online content that can be accessed, including violent video games, and how this will affect our responses to violence in real life. Surprisingly, Geid suggests that violence levels in the US are low at the moment, as are the rates of teenage pregnancy and sexual diseases — and this is not what the scientist were expecting. While he doesn’t condone the violent video games, Geid says they could be giving teenagers a safer way to work through the various hormonal impulses that they’re experiencing. It definitely needs more examination, anyway.

There is another possible advantage of the growing digital trend: YouTube indicates that teenagers all over the world are watching the same clips and laughing at the same jokes, indicating that they are more global minded than their predecessors. Sharing the same jokes could possibly go a long way to breaking down some of the prejudices out there.

“Almost everything that I read and hear about teens was mostly bad,” Geid says. “Even though there are some aspects of that, it’s mostly positive.”

They may be obsessed with texting their friends and posting updates on Facebook, but teenagers today are probably going to have access to technology and hence social and educational opportunities that anyone with a less flexible brain might have trouble imagining. However, there is a cut off and by the age of 30, our brains become more set in their ways, making it harder for us to adapt and cope with new technologies.

Internet in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a regional leader in terms of easy access and use of internet, according to a new research by The Boston Consulting Group, which also showed that easy access and use of the Internet can dramatically affect the growth of national economies and indicated that the difference between countries with low e-friction and those with high e-friction can amount to 2.5 percent of GDP. The BCG e-Friction Index highlights that the UAE and Qatar are two leaders in the MENA region with the least hurdles to Internet adoption. On a global level, the Index ranks the two countries 24 and 23, respectively, outperforming several worlds’ strong emerging economies.

Internet access in the United Arab Emirates is quite well developed and now all Internet access services are competitively priced and unmetered due to the intense competition between service providers. Search engine market share in UAE is led by Google with 89.9% of the market, followed by Yahoo 4.42%, Ask.com 3.3% and Bing with 2.3%. The top three websites visited are Google.ae, Facebook.com and Youtube.com. Such insights can be helpful to lead generation campaigns in Dubai as a guide to how exactly social media and video marketing strategies can harness Facebook posts and music trends to promote various niche markets in UAE.

Social Networking in the UAE

There are 3.6 million Facebook users in the UAE of which 69% are male and 31% are female. There are more 22 to 30 year old Facebook members in the UAE than any other age group and they represent 44% of Facebook users, followed by the 31 to 39 year olds who represent 28%. Facebook users in the UAE generate 3.9 billion page views each month and spend an average of 30 minutes on every visit.

Reasons why so many people prefer using Facebook – or to use it more often – than the other social media channels are interesting. Studies have highlighted that there is a strong link between offline personality portrayal and online personality, and the ones who live their lives on Facebook are extroverts with the maximum number of friends. Studies have also claimed that Facebook meets two basic social needs – firstly, the need to belong and secondly, the need for self-presentation. So, if we go by these theories, then perhaps most UAE residents are outgoing and friendly people, looking for attention of their fellow beings.

LinkedIn follows this with 9 per cent claiming to use it the most. According to the company’s own estimates, there are over nine million users in the Mena region, which includes the UAE.

People who use these channels are more professional and use it to grow their network, increase sales, for recruitment or just to source news.

After LinkedIn, six per cent of online UAE residents use Twitter and studies have shown that those who are avid users are ones interested in knowing about and participating in world events, popular culture, everyday sentiment, etc.

Study by GlobalWebIndex, showed that Google+ is mostly interesting to and used by people who work in IT, company owners or self-employed people. The study’s data shows that nearly a third of Google+ usage is tied to IT workers, it is to engineers what Facebook is to moms and Twitter is to media geeks.

Very few – just 1 percent users – say they use Pinterest. This small percentage of people is the ones who take their hobbies seriously and believe in DIY projects.

E-Commerce in the UAE

The UAE’s retail sector will see an e-commerce explosion over the next few years as local consumers become more tech-savvy, industry experts predict.

The e-commerce market in the UAE is currently valued at $2.5 billion, which is expected to touch $10 billion by 2018.

“E-commerce will be the UAE’s fastest growing business. It is expected to accelerate and create new businesses and job opportunities,” says Sarwant Singh, the head of Frost & Sullivan’s visionary innovation group. According to Singh, the reason for such increase in e-commerce is due to increased connectivity, rapid proliferation of connected devices and services and the government’s initiatives encouraging a digital lifestyle.

“Although selling online in the UAE has the lowest percentage of online purchase world wide, e-Commerce will be growing as a main megatrend for businesses across the UAE,” he said in a special interview with Gulf News on the sideline of 5th GIL 2014: Middle East, The Global Community of Growth, Innovation, and Leadership, held by Frost & Sullivan in Dubai, which held by Frost & Sullivan in Dubai earlier this year.

Research has indicated that a large number of consumers, who have yet to shop online, are using the Internet to research various product offerings and compare prices of competing brands before making a purchase. Retail e-commerce has been overshadowed in the UAE by glamorous and humungous shopping malls but experts say that it is set to pick up.

The UAE was ranked 25th in A.T. Kearney’s global retail index, a study that ranks countries on their online retail potential. According to the index, the UAE’s e-commerce industry has strong potential to grow in the next five years and rival the markets of developed countries.

Mobile Internet in the UAE

There are reported to be more than 16.4 million mobile phone users in the UAE, which represents a mobile penetration rate of 200%.

This figure has reduced somewhat over the last 4 years from a more than 200% mobile penetration rate due to the rapid increase in the population due to the influx of foreign workers into an ever-expanding economy. The UAE is the first country in the Middle East to implement an LTE (long term evolution) broadband network allowing mobile broadband speeds of up to 150Gbps. This presents Internet marketers with a mobile broadband user easily able to view and download a variety of rich media content. Apple Pay was Co-Invented by a Pakistani

Like all things apple, the tech giant’s Apple Pay promises to be a game changer. In this case, iPhone users are now able to securely and privately make swipe-free payments at, to begin with, some 220,000 stores in the U.S. using credit and debit card information stored on their devices. One of the seven men behind this bigger-and-better product is Pakistan’s Ahmer Ali Khan.

Khan, 38, hails from Rawalpindi, graduated from the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology —where friends knew him as The Programmer—and moved to Silicon Valley in 2000. He worked a number of short tech gigs until landing his first full-time job at a startup. On his first day there, Khan was asked if he knew the Java computer language. He didn’t. But he was ambitious and determined. “‘I promise I will know it by tomorrow,’” Raza Shaukat Latif, a friend of Khan’s, recalls him as saying at the time. “Sure enough, he bought a book and crammed the entire night.” By morning, Khan knew the language. “That is just how brilliant he is,” Latif told Newsweek. “He has had the tech bug in him for a very long time.”

It was at the now-defunct ViVOtech, a company specializing in Near Field Communication software, that Khan first tried his hand at building a cell phone-based, contactless payment system. In 2011, Apple picked Khan to work on its “top secret” digital payment system aimed at revolutionizing shopping and, potentially, retail banking.

In February, Khan and six other co-inventors filed their patent for what Apple CEO Tim Cook would unveil to the world on Sept. 9 as Apple Pay. It “will forever change the way all of us buy things,” Cook said at the launch in Cupertino of the new technology, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch.

Khan lives in Milpitas, California, with his wife and two children. Citing Apple rules, he declined to comment for this piece.

Apple Pay allows a shopper to simply hold his Apple device, an iPhone or the Apple Watch, which comes out next year, to a contactless reader to make payments, which are confirmed as transmitted through a short vibration or beep. Credit and debit cards can be added to the device’s Passbook app using the phone camera. All transactions are entirely secure and private, says Apple.

“With Apple Pay, instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers when you add your card, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element, a dedicated chip in iPhone and Apple Watch,” it says. “These numbers are never stored on Apple servers. And when you make a purchase, the Device Account Number alongside a transaction-specific dynamic security code is used to process your payment. So your actual credit or debit card numbers are never shared by Apple with merchants or transmitted with payment.”

In case the device is lost or stolen, banking and other information can be deleted remotely.

Google Wallet preceded Apple Pay but failed to take off and replace plastic. Apple’s recent past is a good indication that with Khan and team’s Apple Pay, it will hit pay dirt.

Ello is a simple, beautiful, and ad-free social network created by a small group of artists and designers. To my mind, Ello is like any other bootstrap startup. It’s simple, pretty effective at one thing, and simple enough to grasp. Those who try to over-complicate Ello do it a disservice. It’s social, just a different take on what that is, and means.

The contrast is intentional. Created by designer and entrepreneur Paul Budnitz, Ello contends that on social networks like Facebook, we, the users, are the product, as our data is sold to advertisers who hope to entice us with ads in our feeds. Ello, on the other hand, positions itself as an antidote to that: it doesn’t include any ads, and one of several manifestos posted on the site says that those behind Ello “dislike ads more than almost anyone else out there.” It doesn’t sell user data to third parties, either, and you can decide whether or not you want to let it gather information about your own Ello activity to improve the site. To make money, it plans to take up a “freemium” model where it sells features to users.

How Does It Work?

It’s remarkably similar to Twitter, but in a stripped-down kind of way. You can still follow people, but there’s a two-tier following system – true pals get put in your ‘friends’ category while casual acquaintances go into ‘noise’. It’s a good way of separating the wheat from the chaff in your online life and it’s an idea that Twitter should definitely steal NOW.

You can post text, videos and pics (including GIFs and emojis) and, unlike Twitter, you’re not hampered by a character limit. That’s great news if you feel constricted by a 140-character bar but not so great if you don’t fancy seeing massive, ranty essays on your timeline, because that’s totally what’s going to happen.
